Squadron Motto: “Prestige”
654 Squadron was formed in West Germany on 1st September 1958.
It operated throughout the Cold War as part of the British Army of the Rhine, and early in 1991 was involved in Operation Granby against the Iraqi Army.
When 4 Regiment moved from Detmold in Germany, back to the UK, 654 Squadron brought their Lynx and Gazelle helicopters with them.
In the early 2000’s 654 Squadron converted to the Apache AH1 Longbow attack helicopter, and with this have been involved in numerous deployments to Afghanistan for Operation Herrick.
As the Attack Helicopter Force rationalised to just four front-line squadrons at Wattisham, 654 Squadron was disbanded.
